GCD Indexing Tutorial
Reserving Comics
Draft #4

Reserving Comics
To reserve a comic for indexing, you tell our reservation guru, Matthias Hofmann
(hofmannm@gofree.indigo.ie), that you
want to index Lameman issue #'s 1-10. He will tell you whether or not they've
already been done or if someone else already has them reserved. It's simple
enough, and to make it even simpler, here's all the information you'll want
to give to Matthias.
- First, look at the book and identify the publisher. Did DC Comics put
this book out, or was it Marvel Comics? Maybe it was Image, or an
independent. Matthias needs that information, as reservations are
sorted first by the publisher. Imprints are listed under the main publisher
(i.e. DC for Vertigo, Helix, Paradox, et al; Marvel for Epic, et al).
- Second, look in the indicia
of the book to find the exact title. Sometimes it will surprise you. For
instance, DC put out a mini called The Secret Society of Superheroes, only
the real title had "JLA:" before it. We index books by the title in the
indicia, so use that title in your reservation.
- Third, if you know the year the series started, include that. Why?
Well, there are at least five books with the title "Aquaman", to name an
example. Without the year, it can be hard to tell which series of a title
you are reserving.
- Fourth, include the specific issue numbers that you want to index (don't
just send "All"; it's too vague). If you only have issues 10-34, then make
sure Matthias knows that those are the issues you intend to do. If it's a
current ongoing book, write "ongoing" in the reservation.
- Last, make sure you include your name. Matthias is sharp, but he's not a
mind-reader. Also, please put "reservations" somewhere in the e-mail subject,
so he doesn't accidentally skip you over when updating the list.
I usually format my reservations the same way they show up in the reservations
listings:
Cartoon Books
Castle Waiting Vol 2; 2000; ongoing
Dark Horse
Xena; 1999; 1-14
DC Comics
Batman: Gotham Adventures; 1998; ongoing
JLA: Black Baptism; 2001; 1-4
If you have additional issues related to a book, like Annuals, Secret Files, or Specials,
reserve them separately as different series. That is also how they need to
be indexed.
If the books you want to index are already taken, Matthias will let you know.
You can also check that out for yourself, before trying to reserve your
books, by looking at the
Reservation List on the
GCD web site. If the list on the web site is more than a couple of months
old, you can e-mail Matthias for a current copy.
